Important Dates

  • Entry Deadline: Thursday, May 2 by 5:00 pm
  • Award Ceremony: Tuesday, May 14 at 7:35 pm
    • Held at the Los Gatos High School small gymnasium. Print viewing begins at 6:30 pm. Parents and the public are invited to attend.

Who can enter

All entrants must be age 18 or under (Junior College students are not eligible) and live and/or attend school in the California counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Alameda, Monterey, or San Benito. Please read all contest rules carefully.

Rules

  • Each student may not submit more than six (6) entries. The six (6) prints in the Senior Portfolio counts as one (1) entry. All entries from a student with more than six (6) entries will be disqualified.
  • All photos must be the students’ own original image and the student must make all prints.
  • Mount all photos on a single 11" x 14" mat board. Framed, double matted, or other sized boards will not be judged.
  • Each print must be entered in one and only one category. Note that Category 7, Darkroom Photography, is only for entries created entirely in the darkroom and only in black-and-white.
  • Copy the official entry form and make sure the following fields are complete and legible: school, instructor name, instructor initials, entry category, student name, address, city, zip, and phone are clearly marked. Securely attach the entry form to the back of the print with the arrow pointing to the top of the print.
  • Prints without an attached official entry form or forms that are incomplete and/or illegible will be disqualified.
  • There are cash or merchandise prizes awards in each category and for “Best of Show.”

Entry categories

Each photographer may not submit more than six (6) entries or all of their entries will be dis-qualified. (See notes below about the Senior Portfolio entry.)

  1. Photojournalism: A picture that tells a story

  2. Architecture: Man-made structures

  3. Nature: The natural world around us

  4. Special Techniques: In-camera, darkroom, or computer manipulation of an image

  5. Studio Photography: Artistic still life in a controlled situation. No portraits

  6. Portraits: People only, no animals

  7. Darkroom Photography: Photograph produced entirely in the darkroom and in black-and-white only. Any subject matter allowed. Judging based on print quality, composition, tonal range, and mounting.

  8. Animals: Any non-human living subject

  9. Senior Portfolio: A selection of six (6) prints representative of a high school Senior's photographic work. Any combination of black-and-white, color, or digital prints are allowed. The six (6) photos in the “Senior Portfolio” entry category counts as one (1) entry. Senior Portfolio entries may also enter other categories with the same image by making a second print of the image.

Entries not picked up at the award ceremony will be available at the same drop-off location after 5pm on Wednesday, May 15.
